Research Project CIAUD/FAULisboa, since 2021: Drawing and digital drawing in the survey of buildings and heritage monuments in Portugal, Spain, Italy and Albania – Representation, Reading and Critique. (Integrated multisensor and direct digital survey – U.A.V. photogrammetry – LiDAR – Laser Scanner – manual survey)
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sintra is located in the cultural and landscape context of the Portuguese countryside, in the Lisbon region. The landscape is characterised by granite hills, wooded ridges, historic gardens and architectural monuments. The buildings are designed not to dominate nature, but to interact and harmonise with it, making use of the elevated ground to offer panoramic views. The microclimate, shaped by the proximity of the ocean and the mountainous terrain of the Serra, has fostered the growth of lush and varied vegetation. Over the centuries, this place has attracted numerous painters, travellers and artists, particularly during the Romantic era, when Sintra became an essential stop on the European Grand Tour. Lord Byron described it as Glorious Eden, and the town became a source of inspiration for writers, painters and poets who celebrated its romantic and mysterious character. The digital survey, carried out using integrated data-acquisition techniques such as terrestrial photogrammetry and UAV, LiDAR and laser scanner technologies, enables the transition from digital data to tactile experience through multisensory 3D haptic models. Understanding the architecture and landscape of Sintra is not a simple cataloguing of monuments, but an interaction between architecture, nature and history, enabling us to interpret the layered landscape, where every element contributes to telling a story.
