La struttura rivelata. Il disegno fra costruzione e forma

Il disegno è il tramite attraverso cui l’invisibile prende forma. Dall’architettura alla scienza, dalla filosofia all’arte, la rappresentazione permette di tradurre idee, percezioni e fenomeni astratti in segni visibili. Nell’ambito del progetto, questa capacità si esprime, in particolare nella rappresentazione delle strutture, intese non solo come elementi tecnici e portanti, ma come principi organizzativi dello spazio, espressioni del pensiero costruttivo, forme di mediazione fra concezione e realizzazione.
Le strutture sono l’ossatura delle configurazioni visibili, il principio fondante di ogni costruzione, sia essa frutto dell’intenzione umana o generata da processi naturali, biologici o morfogenetici. Nella rappresentazione architettonica e nella comunicazione visiva, tuttavia, tendono a rimanere sullo sfondo, celate da superfici, involucri o narrazioni formali. Eppure, è proprio da esse che nasce la bellezza della forma, guidata da leggi costruttive inscritte nell’ordine numerico del mondo o elaborate dall’ingegno progettuale. La struttura non si impone, ma organizza, sostiene, ispira. Essa è un principio silenzioso che regge il visibile e ne determina la coerenza.
In questo contesto, il disegno può assumere un ruolo rivelatore, rendendo percepibile ciò che spesso resta nascosto. La struttura, così svelata, si manifesta come forza generativa, espressione di un ordine profondo che attraversa la materia e il pensiero, l’architettura e la natura. Il disegno, allora, non si limita a rappresentare ciò che appare, ma diventa strumento di indagine e interpretazione. Rivela ciò che connette, stabilizza e dà senso, valorizzando l’estetica della logica costruttiva e la narrativa implicita della resistenza strutturale.
Il numero 17 della rivista diségno propone una riflessione sul ruolo del disegno nella rappresentazione della struttura come forma visibile del pensiero tecnico-progettuale. L’intento è quello di indagare come il disegno possa rendere esplicite le relazioni fra materia e geometria, forma e costruzione, tradizione costruttiva e innovazione tecnologica. Saranno accolti contributi capaci di esplorare la struttura come configurazione formale e principio organizzativo, tanto nell’architettura e nell’ingegneria quanto in altri ambiti disciplinari affini. In un’ottica interdisciplinare e trasversale alle aree dell’architettura e dell’ingegneria, la call accoglie anche contributi che affrontino il tema della struttura nei processi naturali, analizzando come le leggi della crescita e dell’organizzazione del mondo fisico trovino espressione attraverso il disegno, sia in chiave analitica che progettuale.
I contributi, che potranno adottare tanto un taglio teorico-critico quanto uno sperimentale o progettuale, sono invitati a interrogarsi:
- sul ruolo del disegno nel dare visibilità alla struttura come sistema configurativo, simbolico e tecnico-costruttivo;
- sull’evoluzione storica e culturale delle forme strutturali e delle loro rappresentazioni;
- sui metodi e gli strumenti grafici per rappresentare e comunicare la logica strutturale;
- sulle potenzialità progettuali della struttura come generatrice di forma.
Focus 1. Strutture in chiaro. Il disegno come rivelazione costruttiva
Contributi che esplorano il disegno come tramite per rendere visibile la logica costruttiva dell’architettura, mettendo in luce la relazione fra rappresentazione e costruzione, geometria e struttura. Saranno accolti sia approcci analitici che progettuali.
Focus 2. Forme della resistenza. Estetica e immaginario strutturale
Contributi che indagano la forma delle strutture come esito di una cultura visiva e di una tradizione tecnico-figurativa, in una prospettiva storica, teorica o simbolica. Attenzione specifica potrà essere dedicata alla rappresentazione degli elementi strutturali in epoche, contesti e culture diverse, nonché all’analogia con strutture naturali.
Focus 3. Disegnare la struttura. Codici, metodi e strumenti
Contributi centrati sui metodi e gli strumenti di rappresentazione delle strutture: dalla geometria descrittiva alla modellazione digitale, dal disegno esecutivo alle simulazioni computazionali. Particolare attenzione sarà rivolta all’intersezione tra strumenti tradizionali e innovativi nel campo del disegno scientifico e tecnico.
Focus 4. Estetica della logica. Forma, struttura e progetto
Contributi che affrontano la dimensione progettuale della struttura come generatrice di forma. Il disegno è qui inteso come mediatore fra concezione strutturale e invenzione architettonica, e come luogo in cui si manifesta l’intelligenza costruttiva attraverso soluzioni formali integrate e consapevoli.

The Revealed Structure. Drawing Between Construction and Form

Drawing is the medium through which the invisible takes shape. From architecture to science, from philosophy to art, representation allows ideas, perceptions, and abstract phenomena to be translated into visible signs. In the context of design, this capacity is particularly evident in the depiction of structures – understood not only as technical and load-bearing elements but also as organisational principles of space, expressions of constructive thought, and mediators between conception and realisation.
Structures are the framework of visible configurations, the foundational principle of every construction, whether the result of human intent or of natural, biological, or morphogenetic processes. In architectural representation and visual communication, however, they often remain in the background, concealed behind surfaces, envelopes, or formal narratives. Yet it is from these very structures that the beauty of form arises, guided by constructive laws inscribed in the numerical order of the world or shaped by the ingenuity of design. Structure does not impose; it organises, supports, and inspires. It is a silent principle underpinning the visible, giving it coherence.
Within this framework, drawing can assume a revelatory role, making perceptible what is often hidden. Structure, thus revealed, emerges as a generative force, an expression of a deep order that runs through matter and thought, architecture and nature. Drawing, in this sense, does not merely depict what is visible, but becomes a tool for investigation and interpretation. It reveals what connects, stabilises, and gives meaning, highlighting the aesthetics of constructive logic and the implicit narrative of structural resistance.
Issue 17 of diségno invites reflections on the role of drawing in the representation of structure as the visible form of technical and design thinking. The aim is to explore how drawing can make explicit the relationships between matter and geometry, form and construction, building tradition and technological innovation. Contributions are welcome that explore structure as a formal configuration and organisational principle, both in architecture and engineering, as well as in related disciplines. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach that crosses the boundaries of architecture and engineering, this call also welcomes contributions addressing the theme of structure within natural processes, analysing how the laws of growth and the organisation of the physical world find expression through drawing – both analytically and in design terms.
Submissions may adopt a theoretical-critical, experimental, or design-oriented approach, and are encouraged to explore:
- the role of drawing in revealing structure as a configurative, symbolic, and technical-constructive system;
- the historical and cultural evolution of structural forms and their representations;
- graphic methods and tools used to represent and communicate structural logic;
- the design potential of structure as a form-generating element.
Focus 1. Structures Made Visible. Drawing as Constructive Revelation
Contributions that explore drawing as a means of making visible the constructive logic of architecture, highlighting the relationship between representation and construction, geometry and structure. Both analytical and design approaches are welcome.
Focus 2. Forms of Resistance. Structural Aesthetics and Imaginary
Contributions that examine the form of structures as the result of a visual culture and technical-figurative tradition, from historical, theoretical, or symbolic perspectives. Special attention may be given to the representation of structural elements across different eras, contexts, and cultures, as well as analogies with natural structures.
Focus 3. Drawing the Structure. Codes, Methods, and Tools
Contributions focusing on the methods and tools used in the representation of structures – from descriptive geometry to digital modelling, from technical drawing to computational simulations. Special emphasis will be placed on the intersection of traditional and innovative tools in the field of scientific and technical drawing.
Focus 4. The Aesthetics of Logic. Form, Structure, and Design
Contributions addressing the design dimension of structure as a generator of form. Here, drawing is understood as a mediator between structural conception and architectural invention, a space where constructive intelligence is expressed through integrated and purposeful formal solutions.
